A handicraft, in some cases more specifically refined and labeled as artisan handicraft, can be any of a wide range of sorts of work where functional and aesthetic objects are created entirely by one's hand or with the use of just simple, non-technological tools such as needles, carving tools, or even razors. These sorts of crafts are typically crafted for either personal or professional purposes. The practice of creating and wearing handicrafts is also referred to as handicrafts clothing, handicrafts shoes, handicrafts clothes, handicrafts pottery, handicrafts jewelry, handicrafts pottery, and so on.
In spite of their informal nature, handicrafts do lend themselves very nicely to commercialization. A popular type of handicrafts that has been commercially successful is jewelry making, which is now a huge industry. In fact, the handicrafts industry is actually a large segment of the cottage industry sector and the value of handicrafts items is on the rise.
In the past, the most popular handicrafts were quilts, knitting, and tapestry production, and these were the items that were the most highly valued and prized because they were generally handcrafted with a great deal of human effort and skill. Today, although there are certainly many commercially available items, the most valuable handicrafts items are paintings, pottery and vases, furniture, metal working, metal casting, and so on. There are many other categories of handicrafts but these are the most prevalent ones.
The actual term handicrafts is sometimes used in a more generic sense to describe any sort of creation that is created without any particular purpose or idea in mind. Thus, items like paintings, cookware, stone, ceramic tiles, and so on, are considered to be handicrafts. The exact term for this industry is the art and crafts industry. This industry is an international one, with a variety of countries producing and trading items. Although some countries regulate the production of handicrafts, others do not, so the definition of the term can be somewhat fluid.
Art handicrafts include things like ceramics, glassware, textiles, furniture, leather work, mosaics, pottery, and other home furnishings. Crafts associated with agriculture produce things like clothing, sweaters, bedding, grain, feed, and agricultural products. A number of countries in Asia, including China, India, Korea, and Taiwan, have their own versions of the art and crafts industry. The major components of the handicrafts industry include weaving, spinning, manufacturing, and other aspects of an item.
The art and crafts industry has a long tradition, but it has certainly developed at a phenomenal rate over the past century. As globalization continues to enhance opportunities for manufacturers around the world, more products are being made with each passing day. The Asian economy is certainly no slouch when it comes to business, and many Asian countries have been quick to take advantage of the handicrafts industry. In fact, there are countless items of today that are attributed to the art and crafts community, and they have definitely helped define the Asian civilization that we know and love today.
